Every girl needs a special friend (or four) who helps make your life a little bit easier and a lot more entertaining. Whether you call it a tribe, squad, crew, clique or posse, building a variety of relationships with like-minded people is one of the most fulfilling aspects of life. The world can be quite cruel to black women especially, so it’s fundamental that we surround ourselves with people who offer empathy, support and total acceptance.
1. The Mentor
Mentoring is one of the ways we can combat low self-esteem, teenage pregnancy, high school dropout rates and early sexual activity in the black community. A mentoring relationship between Black women and Black girls encourages them to break through stereotypes and helps create a pathway for them to step into roles of leadership. Every black girl needs a positive female role model who can offer the necessary encouragement and support and guide them as they overcome obstacles and difficulties. Even if you don’t have a mentoring program in your community, look for someone who is a few steps ahead of you in life and has the wisdom and patience to help guide you.
