4. Chloe Kitembo
It just doesn’t make sense how someone can be so beautiful and Chloe Kitembo keeps me in awe every single day! She serves breathtaking looks on a regular basis on Instagram, as well as some killer vocals (yes, she can sing too—life just isn’t fair!).
5. Leomi Anderson
Leomi Anderson has an extremely impressive list of accomplishments. She’s modeled on the runway for Tom Ford, Chloé, Yeezy and Moschino and she’s also walked a number of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows. But her work in activism is probably what will inspire you the most. She’s acquired a loyal following on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram where she has unapologetically called out the fashion and beauty industry for its often non-inclusive behavior. In 2016, she founded LAPP, a company that offers young women (particularly black women) the chance to write about issues pertaining to them, from dating to friendship to politics.
6. Dora Owusu
21-year-old model Dora Owusu isn’t just a pretty face. She’s currently studying Biology at California State University (CSU) with aspirations of becoming a physician assistant! Originally from Ghana but born and raised in California, she writes on her website of her struggle to love her dark skin while growing up. Having experienced the hardships of growing up in a colorist society, her main goal now is to represent and empower young dark-skinned black women to love themselves fully. She also recently started a Youtube channel where she shares tips on modelling and gives insight into her daily life!
All in all, although dark-skinned beauties are finally getting some shine on a number of, women of darker skin tones are deserving of being more than just a one-time social media trend. Thankfully, more and more platforms like DDS Magazine that are dedicated to the ongoing promotion of elevation of dark-skinned black women are popping up and ensuring that women of darker tones receive the appreciate we so truly merit.
